    About this item

A lovely Derby porcelain oval "spectacle" basket with pierced walls with double rope twist ornate handles, the terminals finished with moulded flowers and leaves. The outside walls have small blue daisy flowers positioned at each cross section and the gadrooned style foot rim is decorated in lemon yellow, the rim with a fine brown line across the top. The main decoration very well painted in over-glaze enamels of a naturalistic cherry branch and various butterflies and moths and other flying insects.

Provenance: The Dennis G. Rice collection, Gorringes Spring Sale 12 March 2019.

Reference: a similar basket is illustrated in Derby Porcelain The Golden Years by D. G. Rice, plate 113b.

    It measures 21.7cm (8 1/2") wide, 15.5cm (6 1/8") deep and 8.3cm (3 1/4") high.

Condition is very good. There is one section of the spectacle rim that has had a professional repair. The porcelain seems original underneath so it appears this is a clean repair with touching up rather than any fabrication. Essentially invisible to the naked eye. No other restoration or damage. Surface wear is minor and commensurate with age.
