    About this item

Pretty first period Worcester coffee cup, c.1770, painted in polychrome enamels in the Japanese style, with alternating panels of oriental figures holding birds set on a white ground, and orange panels with a gilded diaper pattern and central white "mons"/chrysanthemum flowers. All framed with iron red with a scalloped border. Inside the cup are painted 3 red flowers around the walls and a iron red bordered chrysanthemum in the base. All with gilded centres.

Two bowls in the same pattern are illustrated in "Coloured Worcester Porcelain Of The First Period" by Marsall plate 40, items 836 and 841.

    It measures 2 1/4" (6cm) high, 3" (7.8cm) wide rim to handle and 2 1/8" (5cm) rim to rim.

Condition is very good with no damage or restoration. There is a 1mm fleabite in the glaze below the rim, and light surface wear including wear to the gilding on the rim and a tiny flake loss to the orange enamel beside the handle. There has been a slight smudging of the iron red border above one of the figures and the orange has slightly encroached the edges of the "mons" in places but these final points are clearly factory originated.
