About this item
A lovely George III silver rattle with whistle and fitted with 2 rows of bells, 8 in total out of the original 9. All over bright cut engraved decoration and the original suspension loop to the back to hang on a ribbon around baby's neck to help ward off evil spirits. Fitted with a teether of red coral. Hallmarks to the lower scallop above the teether, date letter E for 1800 (London) with the lion passant. The king's head is obscured by wear and there is no city mark. Maker initials EM for Elizabeth Morley to the back of the whistle.
It measures 10.8cm (4 1/4") long, weight 36g.
Condition is very good with no damage, dents or repairs to the main body of the rattle. A few of the bells are a bit misshapen with some small associated tears from the holes as a result. They are also a bit tarnished. The engraved decoration is nice, the hallmarks are reasonable clear bar the king's head as mentioned. There is one bell missing, the others appear original. The teether has been re-attached with traces of glue visible on close inspection. The whistle doesn't appear to work.
