About this item
EARLY CHILDS TRANSFERWARE MUG
ZEBRA
Staffordshire England ~ c. 1840
This is a whimsical little child's transferware mug, circa 1840. This diminutive piece stands 2 3/4" tall x 2 3/4" wide with an applied loop handle. The mug is light weight and beautifully potted with a pearlware glaze.

It is transfer printed in blue with fine under glaze hand clobbering in blue, green and cherry red. The Zebra prances gaily in a valley with mountains in the background. Wild animals are coveted by all collectors and this great piece will be a great addition to your collection.
The piece is unmarked. It most certainly was made in the Staffordshire district. Mugs like this were used to aid in children's education and moral training, and to encourage their imaginations in the early to mid-19th century. The images were taken from copperplate engravings used in children's books of the same period.

The condition of this exceptional mug is Great. Clean shiny and bright with no damage.
