About this item

Introduction to French Porcelain

Paris porcelain from the late 18th and early 19th century is often grouped under the name Old Paris or Vieux Paris. It was made by a number of independent workshops rather than one single factory, and it is known for fine white porcelain bodies, hand painted decoration, rich gilding, and a wide range of fashionable styles from neoclassical through to more playful decorative forms.

Description of the Cup and Saucer

This cup and saucer is best described as an early 19th century French porcelain set in the Old Paris taste, with a bright pink ground, hand painted floral reserves, and generous gilt decoration. The saucer has a shaped layout with three white floral panels around the well, while the cup carries matching floral painting and a striking gilt dolphin form handle that gives the set far more character than an ordinary floral tea cup.

There is an incised mark on the base of the cup, though now partially worn. The combination of the pink ground, dolphin handle, and quality painting suggests this was a luxury item, possibly a special commission produced in the late 18th to early 19th century.

Condition

Minor wear to the gilding on the rim and handle. No chips or cracks observed.

Why You Should Buy

This piece captures a moment in porcelain history where beauty and invention met. This is a true standout, and possibly the only of its kind.
