About this item
The Essentials
German glazed porcelain cockatoo on a tall burgundy pedestal Attributed to Wagner & Apel Lippelsdorf, Thuringia Circa 1950s to 1960s Underglaze blue crown-type factory mark Good vintage condition with minor glaze and surface wearDescription
A German porcelain cockatoo attributed to the Lippelsdorf factory in Thuringia, the former Wagner & Apel works that became VEB Porzellanfiguren Lippelsdorf after 1949. Its heavily diffused blue mark corresponds in overall form with the crown mark used by the factory from 1951 to 1974, while Lippelsdorf was producing animal and bird figures throughout this period.
The cockatoo is modelled in blue-grey, cream and pale pink above a tall burgundy red pedestal with a faceted base. That combination of a naturalistically modelled bird and a simple geometric pedestal gives the piece a particularly recognisable character.
