About this item
Introduction to Hispano-Moresque Pottery
Hispano-Moresque pottery, a fusion of Islamic and Spanish artistic traditions, became prominent in the 15th century. This style is characterised by its iridescent glaze, known as "lustreware," which was developed under the influence of Moorish artisans in Spain. Featuring intricate designs of floral arabesques, geometric shapes, and figural motifs, Hispano-Moresque pieces often evoke themes of nature and paradise, which are important in Islamic art. The lustre technique and design elements made these ceramics highly desirable throughout Europe, bridging cultural and artistic influences across regions.
Description of the Hispano-Moresque Plate and Bowl
This exquisite pair includes a lustre plate and a two-handled bowl, both crafted in the 15th-century Hispano-Moresque style. We believe these to be 18th-century revival examples, drawing on the rich traditions of earlier Moorish ceramic art. The plate features a beautifully iridescent glaze with a central bird motif, surrounded by intricate floral arabesques. Its refined shape and shimmering lustre give it a striking appearance, reminiscent of the Moorish artistic heritage of the time.
The accompanying bowl, with two handles, was designed for functional use, likely intended for serving food. Its decoration features floral motifs, inspired by the concept of paradise in Islamic art, as well as geometric shapes.
The plate measures 18 cm in diameter. Both items show some surface wear on the enamel, consistent with their age, and the bowl handles have been re-attached. Despite these imperfections, both pieces remain in good overall condition. They carry additional significance as they were previously owned by renowned ceramics expert Henry Sandon, with his collection sticker still present on the back.
Why Should I Buy?
This Hispano-Moresque lustre plate and bowl set is a rare find that embodies the rich cultural history of 15th-century ceramics. The intricate lustre glaze and motifs evoke the blend of Moorish and Spanish artistry, making these pieces not only beautiful but also historically significant. With the added distinction of having been part of Henry Sandon's personal collection, these items are perfect for collectors interested in Islamic and European ceramic heritage.
