About this item

The Essentials

Japanese Kutani porcelain plate Early Meiji period, circa 1870s to 1880s Hand painted aka-e decoration with iron red enamel, black detail and gilding Good antique condition with crazing and wear Marked 九谷製 to the base, reading Kutani sei, meaning made in Kutani

Description

This is an early Meiji Japanese Kutani porcelain plate with the handwritten Kutani sei mark to the base. It is hand painted in the aka-e red painted style, with a white bird set among flowering branches, bamboo and shaped red reserves with gilt scrollwork.

The pale ground leaves space around the painting, with the branch work and red reserves spread across the surface. The reverse is decorated too, with red sprigs around the rim and concentric lines around the foot, so the plate has detail on both sides when handled.
