About this item
Charming large Victorian Staffordshire flat back spill vase as a russet and white cow and her suckling calf, c.1860. Set on a tall shaped base, naturalistically painted with grassy tussocks and with a little stream running to one side. The spill holder is decorated as a tree trunk. A gilded band around the base and her horns are also gilded. The rear is undecorated.
It measures 29cm (11 3/8") high and 20cm (8") by 11.5cm (4 1/2") wide.
Condition is very good with a couple of small points to note, there is a small chip to the edge of her right ear and to the inside edge of the right horn. No restoration. There are a couple of fine hairlines in the glaze only behind her head and under the neck, a few small paint flake losses, and some wear to the gilding on her horns, black enamel on her nose and the gilded band around the base.
