About this item

Introduction to Llangollen Pottery

Llangollen Pottery was founded in 1951 in the Welsh town of Llangollen and remained in operation until 1989. Known for its handcrafted ceramics, the pottery produced both functional and decorative wares that reflected traditional Welsh designs. Artisans used time-honoured techniques, contributing to the broader revival of Welsh craft in the 20th century.

Description of the Vase

This hand-thrown studio pottery vase from Llangollen Pottery was made in the mid-to-late 20th century, showcasing the workshop’s distinctive approach to glazing and form. Crafted from terracotta clay, the vase has a tall, cylindrical shape with a slight flare at the rim. A ribbed texture runs vertically along the body, enhancing the interaction of light with the glaze.

The glossy, mottled glaze features blended tones of green, brown, and black, creating a fluid, organic pattern that varies with each piece. Visible throwing lines on the interior highlight its handmade nature, while the base bears a stamped mark reading Llangollen Pottery Wales, confirming its origin. The glazing technique allows for a rich interplay of colours, reflecting the studio’s attention to surface detail.

Condition

Good condition with minor wear consistent with age. Small glaze imperfection near the rim.

Why You Should Buy

A finely made studio piece with a rich glaze and distinctive texture, a true example of the craftmanship found in Wales.
