About this item
Stunning Minton majolica centrepiece for sweetmeats. A three compartment bowl mounted by 2 putti fighting over a jar of honey and held aloft on the shoulders of 3 winged mermaids sitting on a finely detailed scroll footed base. Lovely classic colours of blue, gold and green withe the characteristic blue and brown marbling to the underside of the bowl and a turquoise wash to the underneath.
Marked to the base with impressed model number 119, "M" and the Minton date cypher for 1859. Also painted number 2.
It measures 32cm (12 1/2") high and 21.5cm (8 1/2") wide.
Condition is very good: There is a small section of very good quality restoration to the neck of the standing putto. There is also a hairline across the foot of the same putto which may be from firing. There is a small fault to the base where the raised decoration on the base itself has been smudged a bit before firing and a few small firing/shrinkage tears to the more complex parts of the clay, e.g. where the wings join a mermaid's body.
