About this item

Description

A 19th-century Moroccan pottery berrada from Fez, a traditional vessel used for holding and pouring liquids. Made with a rounded body, two curved handles and a tall neck, it is decorated in the distinctive Fez palette of blue, green, yellow and manganese brown over a creamy white glaze, with a style of decoration that can be traced back through the Moroccan-Andalusian artistic tradition.

The elaborate hand-painted design brings together curling arabesques, crescent shapes and stylised flowers, arranged symmetrically around the body, with smaller repeating patterns decorating the neck. These designs were used by Fez potters for centuries, influenced by the geometric and botanical ornament found throughout Islamic art.

An interesting detail is the surviving red pigment, consistent with minium, which was traditionally added to Fez pottery after firing, sometimes by the merchants who sold it. Originally used to cover marks left by the supports inside the kiln, these red touches eventually became a decorative feature themselves.
