About this item

Introduction to Moroccan Pottery

Morocco has one of the oldest ceramic traditions in North Africa, shaped by Islamic, Berber and Andalusian artistry. The pottery centres of Fez and Safi are known for their vivid blue, green and black glazes, painted freehand beneath a transparent glaze that enhances their organic charm. These workshops continue centuries-old techniques in wheel-throwing, natural pigments and wood-fired kilns.

Description of the Vase

This hand-thrown earthenware vase is formed in the garlic-neck shape, its broad shoulder tapering to a slender neck and flared rim. The surface is decorated with alternating floral and geometric motifs in cobalt blue, turquoise, yellow and black, divided by vertical bands.

The glaze shows pooling and natural irregularities from the firing process, with a small vent hole in the lower body typical of Moroccan kiln practice. The underside bears a hand-painted mark in dark pigment.

Condition

Crazing, wear and small losses around the foot and rim, with minor firing pits. Overall solid and well-preserved,

with honest signs of use and age.

Why You Should Buy

It’s a vibrant, hand-made survivor of Morocco’s living ceramic tradition - full of colour, imperfection and character.
