Pair of 19th century Japanese enamelled porcelain vases. The vases of baluster form with tapering convex tops, decorated with oriental flowers, trailing foliage, birds and butterflies all over a white ground. Signed to the bases.

The Tree Peony in oriental culture is thought of as the king of flowers and the flower of wealth and honour, traditionally a token of love and exchanged as a farewell gift. Crab Apple flowers are sometimes combined with Peonies to express the wish that the whole family will achieve wealth and honour.
