Introduction to 18th-Century Chinese Porcelain
In the early 18th century, during the late Kangxi (1661–1722) and early Qianlong (1736–1795) periods of the Qing Dynasty, Chinese porcelain reached a pinnacle of refinement and artistry. The imperial kilns at Jingdezhen produced porcelain with pure white bodies and lustrous glazes, setting a benchmark for quality. Underglaze blue decoration, created using cobalt oxide, became a hallmark of the era, often featuring intricate floral motifs like lotus scrolls and chrysanthemums, which symbolised purity and longevity.
Description of the Chargers
This large pair of Chinese porcelain chargers, dating to the early 18th century, showcases exceptional craftsmanship. Decorated in underglaze blue, the central motif features chrysanthemums, surrounded by densely painted lotus sprays linked by scrolling vines, a design often referred to as the "lotus scroll." The border is adorned with interlocking geometric patterns. The reverse features scrolling blue decoration, while the foot rim’s fine paste highlights the high-quality porcelain typical of this period.
Condition
One charger has been staple repaired, as shown in the photos, while the other remains in good condition for its age. The pair retains their beauty and historical importance.
Why You Should Buy
This pair of chargers represents an exceptional example of early 18th-century Chinese porcelain, showcasing the elegance and technical skill of the late Kangxi period. Rare to find as a pair, these chargers celebrate a pivotal era in Chinese art.
