    About this item

Charming early Derby pair of figures of seated shepherd and shepherdess playing musical instruments, c.1770. Model numbers N301, titled by Haslem as "Pair sitting, piper and guitar". Lovely bright pastel enamels, set on classic scrolled base with a small bocage either side of the tree stumps the figures are seated on. The female plays a guitar and has a sheep standing to her side and the gent plays bagpipes and has his trusty dog to his side.

Both have patch marks to the base and are incised with the model number.

    They measure 18.5cm (7 1/4") high, 11cm (4 1/4") wide and 8.5-9cm (3 1/4-3 1/2") deep.

Condition is very good with no restoration and just a couple of small areas of damage: the tips of the feathers on both their headdresses, the tips of the gent's fingers on his left hand and a small glaze nick to the lady's base along with the usual few losses to the bocage. There has also been some oxidisation to the black enamelled areas of the gent's hair and shoes and the hooves of the sheep. Some wear to the gilding but otherwise colours remain bright.
