AESTHETIC BLACK TRANSFERWARE PLATE
JAPAN POLYCHROME PATTERN
Gildea and Walker Potteries ~ Late Mayers
Tunstall, Staffordshire England ~ c. 1883
This outstanding very large 10 5/8 " victorian aesthetic dinner plate is transfer printed in black with hand painting under glaze in shades of robin's egg blue, golden yellow and orange.
The pattern features geometric designs along the outer rim surrounding panels filled with Japanesque Camellia and jasmine flowers and fruit filled branches of oriental plums. The central image has Lotus buds and flowers and their exciting leaves shimmering in the water.
The pottery of Gildea and Walker produced some of the most elegant ceramics of the aesthetic movement. This pattern is the cream of the crop and a very desirable pattern.
