Rare Minton Porcelain Model Of Newfoundland Dog c.1830-1840

A fine early 19th century model of a Newfoundland dog, standing on a shaped rocky base, produced by Minton, c.1830-40. Sparsely decorated mainly with gilt highlights to the base, with gilt rim and gilt collar and tag. The face has some enamel detail to pick out features, the outstretched tongue and inside the mouth in pale pink and around the lower part of the nose, grey on top of the nose and very finely painted black eyes. Very finely modelled, even with individual teeth and the inside of the mouth shaped realistically as well as the musculature and fur. The base is closed with a central open hole.

This piece is illustrated and documented in "Dogs In English Porcelain Of The 19th Century" by Dennis G. Rice, colour plate 210, and pages 136 and 137. 

It measures 12.2cm (4 3/4") long, 5.7cm (2 1/4") deep and 9.5cm (3 3/4") high.

Condition is excellent with no damage or restoration. There is the very faintest hairline across the front of his right ankle, near enough invisible. Some very light discolouration to the reverse by his shoulder and the top of the tree stump and some very minor gilt wear in spots on the base.
