About this item
A fine porcelain tea cup and saucer by John & William Ridgway, c.1820, with a rich mazarine blue ground reserving four shell type shapes and a central circle with scalloped edge. The latter very finely painted in enamels with a bouquet of garden flowers on a gilt pedestal. The shells are also painted in buff and pale blue enamel and over gilded with detailing. A flowing gilt design of trailing vines run across the blue ground and a further gilt frieze runs inside the rim of the cup. Finished with gilt bands around the rims and handle. Both pieces marked with the pattern number 2/1070 in red enamel.
The cup measures 5cm (2") high to the handle and 9.3cm (3 5/8") rim to rim and the saucer measures 14.3cm (5 5/8") wide and 2.5cm (1") high.
In very good condition with no damage or repair and minor handling wear. There is a small underglaze chip to the inside of the cup foot rim caused during manufacture.
