The Essentials
Hispano-Moresque glazed earthenware dish attributed to Manises, Valencia Late 15th to 16th century Wheel-thrown red earthenware with cream glaze and polychrome painted decoration Heraldic emblems set within Islamic-derived radial and foliate ornament Age-related rim wear and a hairlineDescription
An attributed Hispano-Moresque dish from the Manises tradition of Valencia, dating to around the 16th century, when local potters were combining the ceramic traditions of Islamic Spain with the heraldic language of Christian Europe.
Its decoration is arranged around a cobalt-blue field with three large emblematic reserves, including a particularly distinctive blue and cream chequy shield, alongside green devices and broad curling foliate ornament.
Manises workshops were producing heraldic pottery for European royal and noble clients throughout the 15th century, while retaining Nasrid-derived atauriques, radial layouts and ceramic techniques inherited from the Islamic tradition.
