About this item
The Essentials
18th century Spanish writing inkwell Talavera de la Reina, Toledo, first half to mid-18th century Tin-glazed earthenware painted in cobalt blue Animals, birds, flowers and architectural scenes Good antique condition with age-related chips and glaze lossesDescription
This 18th-century Talavera de la Reina inkwell belongs to the blue-painted animal and landscape tradition associated with the Toledo potteries, with cobalt scenes of birds, animals, flowers and small buildings running around the square body. The central ink well and shaped rests around the top show it was made as a working desk piece.
Talavera workshops of the period drew on hunting subjects, local landscape and chinoiserie-inspired architecture, and all three appear here in the animals, stylised plants and little towered buildings.
