    EARLY AESTHETIC MOVEMENT TRANSFERWARE PLATE

    PALMYRA PATTERN

    Sampson Hancock Potteries

    Staffordshire England  c. 1883

This is a stunning transferware plate dates to 1883.  The very large plate is 10 3/4 inches in diameter.  The color is a rich wonderful marine blue .  The pattern is named PALMYRA, featuring a fantastic wide, busy band of sunflowers with a background of geometric shapes.  The well of the platter has a central flower pot full of oversized sunflowers surrounded by rows of buttercups and geometrical flourishes.

The piece is marked on the underside with an impressed registration mark, the pattern name the intials S. H.  that identifies the maker as Sampson Hancock, a pottery maker working in the Staffordshire region of England from 1858-1891.

Never used.  The piece is in great condition, very clean shiny and bright. .  It is absolutely gorgeous - elegant and well potted, with richly detailed transfers reflecting the Victorian love of nature and the exotic.
