About this item
The raised decoration on this impressive majolica jardiniere was formed in separate moulds and then applied by hand. This is called sprigging. After these sprigs were fired onto the body they were then glazed with the majolica glazes. Possibly French, it carries the number 2016 incised into the base, and a small impressed mark. I have been unable to attribute it to a maker. The jardiniere stands 395 mm (15.5 inches) high and has a diameter of 440 mm (17.5 inches). It weighs in at 8.75 kgs (19.3 lbs). Some small chips to the footrim have been professionally repaired. There are three chips to the underside of the inside rim and two small ones to the underside of the outer rim. These last two are only seen when the jardiniere is turned upside down. There are a few small areas of damage to the sprigs as well. It would date from around 1880.
