About this item
Fabulous antique George Jones majolica large serving dish formed from overlapping cucumber leaves dotted with flowers and a small cumber with flower attached at one end.
Referenced in the printed catalogue page in George Jones Ceramics 1861-1951 by Cluett, figure 72, titled "Cucumber Tray", model number 2563. Marked to the reverse with impressed factory mark and other marks dating for 1868.
It measures 42cm (16 1/2") long, 22cm (8 5/8") wide and 6.3cm (2 1/2") high.
Condition is very good; 2 of the petals on the main flower have been professionally restored and 2 very small rim chips have also been invisibly filled (both are quite close together and the final photograph shows this section close up). Light surface wear, a touch of rubbing to the glaze to a couple of the high relief points. Some fine firing dots on the yellow flowers and a short firing line at the rim.
