About this item
A nice majolica sardine box by George Jones, c.1875, with a turquoise ground with a frieze of vertical seaweed spikes around the base. The cover has myriad layers of seaweed upon which are draped 3 very realistically modelled and decorated sardines. The rims of both are in ochre yellow, the box rim with a rope twist effect, and the inside is decorated in a lovely lilac/pink ground. Originally it would have had a stand but that clearly creates no barrier to use or display. Marked to the base with a black painted "Z." in an unglazed section amongst the usual marbled ground, and the same painted mark inside the edge of the cover.
Reference: George Jones Ceramics 1861-1951, Cluett, Figure 109.
It measures 9cm (3 1/2") high and 14.7cm (5 3/8") by 12.7cm (5") wide.
Condition is excellent with no damage or restoration. Minimal surface wear and no crazing.
