About this item

Introduction to West German Modernist Ceramics

During the mid-20th century, West Germany became a centre for innovative ceramic design, with workshops such as Carstens, Scheurich, and Bay producing bold modernist forms for the international market. Often combining clean silhouettes with striking glazes or graphic decoration, these pieces remain popular with collectors and interior stylists alike.

Description of the vase

This modernist vase by Carstens Tönnieshof features a tall cylindrical body with a flared, trumpet-like rim. It is marked to the base with model number 665-26, indicating a height of 26 cm.

The body is decorated with incised horizontal bands beneath a soft white glaze, interrupted by a stylised hand-painted motif in black, blue, and red. The interior is finished in a contrasting teal glaze that adds visual depth when viewed from above. The overall effect is striking yet restrained, making it suitable for both collectors and modern interiors.

Condition

No chips, cracks, or restoration. Minor age-related marks only. The vase is in excellent overall condition.

Why You Should Buy

The vivid teal interior and graphic motif make this a standout mid-century vase with strong visual appeal.
