A truly outstanding, extra-large French crystal wine cooler or vase with beautifully hand knotted and applied side handles, with makers mark for Cristal J B France.
J B stands for Joseph Bleichner, who was the main designer at St Louis Crystal, France from 1903-1957. Given the title of Head of ‘Fantasy’ designs, his work is recognised as some of the most avant garde pieces of his generation. Because he was under contract to St Louis, he was not allowed to sign his own name, so only used his initials to indicate his work.
This remarkable vase or champagne bucket weighs an impressive 6.4 kg and is hand moulded to create an optical illusion of rippled water.
