    Black and Gold Chinoiserie Decoration
    Of Good size with lobed corners
    Canton, China
    Circa 1840-1860

    Measures: 49.9 cm x 49.9 cm (when open)

    An attractive antique Chinese export laquer folding chess and backgammon board in black and gilded lacquer. Decorated with chinoiserie scenes with panels of scholars in a garden to the edge. The chessboard squares each with a Chinese figure observing flowers. Board hinged to the middle allowing it to be folded. To the interior backgammon board with central hinged 'bar'. 

    Condition: Attractive 'country house' condition. Acceptable scuffing, scratching and chipping to lacquer. Tarnishing to the exterior gilding (one side faded, less lustrous and stained). Knocks to the edges and to the lobed corners. Warpage and shrinkage to the lacquer, cracking to the panels.

    Elegantly distressed, characterful and highly desirable. Suitable chess pieces and backgammon can also be sought.
