Beautiful first half of the 17th Century Period oak bible box initailed I.S and curiously scratch carved to much earlier date 1540 which would date it to the reign of Henry XIII and the house of Tudor. The front board is excellently carved with flowerheads, leaves and ferns. These boxes as the name suggests would have been staorage for the holy book but also important documents (deeds, wills ,indentures etc). A stunningly decorative box which oozes charm.
Condition commensurate with age and use.
