    About this item

This antique Scottish Georgian Elm Trunk or Chest boasts an attractive rich patination and colour. Dated to 1823. This trunk is bound on all four corners by beautiful cast straps and constructed with single planks to all sides. The original lid features a rubbed brass plaque that as far as we can tell reads

"John McMaken? LT 26TH REGIMENT 1823. (A Scottish regiment now disbanded)

There also appears to be a heart theme to this trunk (lid corners, outline around the keyhole of a now missing embelishment). The 26th regiment is recorded as being in Ireland at this period, garrisoned at Kinsale, Co.Cork and The Curragh, Co.Kildare aswell as other towns.

The interior is clean and retains the original forged strapped hinges. The fitted candle box and another internal fitting have been removed at some point in its history. The sides incorporate original forged cast carry handles.

Condition report this chest is in good original condition commensurate with age and use. A loss of one corner strap bottom left and a hole on the left side where it would have been fixed. It retains its original lock but has no key.
