Publication line: "London, Published July 7th 1879 by Henry Graves & Co. 6 Pall Mall S.W. Copyright Registered". Signed beneath the image in pencil "Whistler" lower right and with his "butterfly" mark and "Richard Josey" lower left. The Printseller's Association, London, dry stamp (Lugt, 2050/2051) with initials "FKU" to the centre.
An important print signed by both the artist and the printmaker of what has been described as an "American Icon" and a "Victorian Mona Lisa". Widely held as being one of the most famous works by an American artist outside the United States, the painting is now held by the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, having been bought by the French state in 1891.
Condition:-
Good broad margins. General grubbiness. Staining along the bottom margin along the area of the signatures. Droplet stain to the margin beneath the feet of the subject. Would benefit from professional cleaning from a paper conservator.
