About this item
17th Century 4 panel oak coffer
the lid with 3 panels and carved edge, over a carved frieze and 4 panels carved with diamonds, the original wire hinges have been replaced with later strap hinges
English, circa 1690
Condition: This coffer has not been re-polished, the top is more faded than the front and sides and shows signs of use, the middle panel is cracked, the front left panel is cracked and so is the front right, these cracked panels are totally sound and have been like this for many years. The feet of these chests were prone to rot from sitting on damp floors, but these are all good solid feet, a couple show signs of historic wood worm which has been treated. Complete with its original lock, but no key.
