About this item
A rare chance to buy a piece of Elizabethan history....this stunning oak coffer was made in the last quarter of Elizabeth 1st reign and is known as a plank coffer..... as it was made by simply joining planks of oak together with large hand made iron clout nails...it still has the original blacksmith made wrought iron strap hinges and the original wooden lock....beautifully decorated with intricate scratch and punchwork , combined with deep triple line decoration...all the planks are original and have gained a natural colour & patina.....so hard to find a coffer from this period, that is still totally original.
English. C1560-80. Provenance of a private collection.
