About this item
This is a large antique four panel coffer. A Scottish, oak chest or window seat, dating to the Georgian period, circa 1750.
Superb Scottish example from the George II period, displaying a desirable aged patina and in good order throughout. Quality Scottish oak presents fine grain interest and wisps of medullary rays. Graced with caramel and chestnut hues beneath the wax polish finish.
Stout lid opens upon internal strap hinges. Wide, generous interior replete with candle box. Fascinating lock escutcheon with amazing period lock and clasp mechanism — key absent.
Skilfully carved panels adorn the lid and front fascia. Four bevelled shields accentuate the lid, ideal for use as a window seat. Distinctive front fascia carved with Saltire motif, the rear finished with bevelled lozenges. Raised prominently upon wide, block feet to each corner.
This is an appealing antique four panel coffer, of generous proportion and fascinating age. Solid joints and construction, delivered waxed, polished and ready for the home.
