    This is an ancient Roman silver Miliarense of emperor Valens, dating to 364 - 367 A.D.

    Obverse: D N VALEN S P F AVG "Our Lord Valens, Pious and Blessed August" pearl-diademed draped and cuirassed bust facing right

    Reverse: VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM, "to the Victory of Our Emperors" Victory standing right, left foot on globe, inscribing VOT V MVLT X on shield resting on cippus. "Vows (prayers) on the Fifth anniversary (of the emperor's rule), and for his (anticipated) Tenth anniversary"

    This coin was minted in Rome, mintmark RB. The R stands for Rome and the B for Beta (the Second officina at the mint). This coin had travelled across the empire, being buried in the Thruxton Hoard in England. This coin was purchased directly from the finder after being disclaimed by the British Museum.
