About this item
A stylish mid-century Danish blue glass ashtray stylized as a spaceship designed by renowned glass maker Per Lütken (Danish, 1916-1998) for the Holmegaard glass factory and dating from around 1960.
Per Lütken was a leading designer who worked at Holmegaard from 1942 until his death in 1998. In that time he designed more than 3,000 pieces and many are iconic designs of the period and highly collected today.
This finely hand-blown clear blue glass ashtray stands on a narrow rounded foot with a slightly recessed polished pontil and is of wide squat rounded form with a narrow top opening with polished cigarette rests to either side. The simplicity in design likened the piece to a ‘flying saucer’, an obsession of the time, and it became known as the ‘Atomic Spaceship’ design. The ashtray has a flag containing an anchor to the base and possibly made for a shipping line and is marked Holmegaard with artist marks for Per Lütken.
