    About this item

A Pair of Sheraton Mahogany Bowfront Commodes, or Chests
Of small proportions, each comprising three graduated drawers.  The top, with boxwood and ebony stringing, extends slightly over the backboards so that the top will finish to the wall over a skirting.  The three drawers all with cockbeading, oak linings and original locks, the same key fits all 6 locks, supplied with a key for each chest.  The brass repousse handles are original.  Stands upon stepped splayed feet,  united by a serpentine frieze to the front and repeated to the sides.  The panelled backs retain their original finish.
    English, circa 1790

Pairs of chests are unusual, often near pairs are found, these however were made as a pair, the drawers from one chest are still interchangeable with the other, this is the true sign of a fine cabinet maker, to achieve this when new is exceptional, to do 200 years later is testament to the quality.  The scale of these chests make them very versatile, they are low and small so could be easily accommodated in many locations.

Condition: The chests are of good colour and uniform patination.
