    About this item

An elegant, rare fine quality 18th century (circa 1785) Hepplewhite period mahogany side table with good original colour - ADDITIONAL IMAGES CAN BE VIEWED BELOW:

This table consists of a finely figured mahogany veneered top with boxwood stringing, a deep outer curl mahogany banding and boxwood stringing, all laid on solid mahogany boards.

This leads down to an edge of unusual design consisting of a finely inlaid boxwood dentil decoration with a moulded edge below.

The mahogany frieze having ebony and boxwood stringing to the lower edge with a central rectangular design consisting of a curl mahogany panel to the centre with boxwood, tulip, ebony and stained sycamore banding.

To the top of the front legs a boxwood and mahogany lattice design with tulip crossbanding, the four legs of elegant square tapered form with boxwood stringing to each four corners, terminating on a spade foot.

George Hepplewhite (1727-1786) was known as one of the ‘big three’ of English furniture makers of the 18th century along with Thomas Chippendale and Thomas Sheraton.

He was born in Tyne and Wear and sources suggest he served as apprentice to the famous cabinet maker Gillows of Lancaster, later moving to London.

He worked in the Neoclassical style, known for elegant and simple designs such as straight tapering legs and shield back chairs, his designs being his interpretation of the popular styles of the time by architect and interior designer Robert Adam.

Hepplewhite’s designs were popular at the time, also the simple and elegant features continue to either be reproduced or be an important influence in the designs of contemporary furniture makers today.

This style of table was known as a sideboard table in The Hepplewhite Design book, we would refer to it now as a side table.

This table is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
