About this item
A set of four late 19th century vernacular Irish Sugan chairs.
Fresh to market, the chairs have remained within the one family ever since being made. We sourced them direct from the family member who had inherited them. They originate from the Glen of Aherlow, in County Tipperary.
Constructed in the traditional method, each chair is crafted mostly using elm.
It is very uncommon to find a set of genuine antique Sugan chairs, making these even all the more special and desirable.
These wonderful vernacular chairs were found in homes across Ireland, with the name 'Sugan' meaning a straw or hemp rope.
This rustic construction method used to form the rope seat may appear simple, however it is ingenious in that the weight of the sitter helps to pull the joints of the frame together.
We particularly like the wear pattern to the front cross stretcher, showing where feet rested for many years.
Considering they were crafted by hand they are all almost identical in size and design. All still have traces of matching historic pale green paint. Each chair does however exhibit small charming nuances. The difference in the type of Sugan rope work could be an indicator of historic repair or just what the maker had available when making them.
The front leg on one chair is particularly worn back. This is most likely from the heel of a shoe rubbing against an existing fault in the grain. The result is a charming detail illustrating the chair’s long life of daily use.
Dimensions :-
Height - 84-86.5cm
Width - 46-47.5cm
Depth - 38-42cm
Seat height - 39/40cm
Seat depth - 33/34cm
Backrest height - 42.5-43.5cm
With age related wear and tear.
Given the rope work on the seat panels are all most likely original, we would suggest replacing if the chairs are intended to be used. Considering the rope is over 100 years old it wouldn't be feasible for it to still be load baring.
It has become commonplace for these types of chairs to be hung on the wall or placed in the corner of a room, making for a wonderful vernacular display.
With no obvious signs of woodworm which is rare to see.
An upright support on two chairs has an historic crack where the cross stretcher is fixed. These are illustrated in the listing photographs. One other chair has a minor crack in the same location.
