    About this item

This is a pine church cupboard with double doors and typically ecclesiastical canted corners at the top cornice. It has a lovely shaped and deep cornice with long slim single panelled doors under. It stands on a good plinth. Inside the doors open onto 4 shelves with there being 2 half width drawers below the bottom shelf, hidden inside the cupboard. It is a lovely deep colour and has the original brass escrutcheons but sadly no key - keys are a rarity. The left hand door closes with a hook fastener inside and the right one sits to. It stays closed but a ball catch could quite easily be added should you require a firmer fit.

The cupboard is in good order. It stands well and level and has no wobbles. The doors are well attached and open and close as they should. However, it is well over a hundred years old and not entirely without fault. There is a tiny bit of out lean at the very top of the right door where the two doors meet, this doesn’t affect it closing and had to be pointed out to me, I think the door has got damp at some point and not been properly closed. It is dry now but there is a tiny bit of a warp to the top opening edge about 2 inches in length and maybe half a cm out. Other than that the body work is great. You can also see that the very top part of the cornice has been painted flat black at some point, not recently I don’t think. Finally, inside the cupboard one of the two half drawers opens with string rather than a handle.

The cupboard dates to around 1890 - 1920 or thereabouts. It is extremely useful and would store or hide a multitude of things. I have one of these under my stairs with housekeeping stuff and baking pans in, it’s so useful. But it would work equally well for  almost anything.

    The cupboard measures 110cm wide x 48cm deep x 175cm tall.
