About this item
EARLY CHILDS TRANSFERWARE CHRISTENING MUG
SAMUEL
Staffordshire England ~ c. 1840
This is child's transferware mug, circa 1840. This diminutive piece stands 2 1/2 " tall x 2 3/4 " wide with an applied loop handle. The mug is light weight and beautifully potted with a pearlware glaze.
It is transfer printed in Red with a cartouche of classical scrolls surrounding two girls at a swing. The opposite site has the name “ SAMUEL.
The piece is unmarked. It most certainly was made in the Staffordshire district. Mugs like this were made as gifts for good children, christenings, and rewards.
The condition of this exceptional mug is great. Clean and bright, and no wear, probably never used.
