Army & Navy was founded in 1871, both by and on behalf of British Army and Navy officers, the main purpose of the 'Army & Navy Co-operative Society Ltd' was the provision of various products and goods to its members at the lowest possible profitable rate of return at the time.
Over the course of the 1870s and 80s the co-operative expanded the range of goods it provided to include such products and services as stationery, clothing and tailoring, groceries, guns, banking and furniture,
These Tantalus boxes were found in the finest of homes, generally lockable due to containing expensive drinks, making it hard for anyone to take a drink without permission. This is a lovely piece, and remains in original condition.
