A Victorian Alabaster "Stanhope" Optical Viewer or "Peep Egg"
With a view of "The Crystal Palace"
English Circa 1855
7.5 cm high x 5.3 cm diameter
Turned alabaster, decorated with coloured enamels, glass viewing lens, paper print within with coloured quartz gravel chip border.
"Peep Eggs" were popular Victorian opitcal toys and often made as souvenirs of celebrated sites. The view within this one is of Crystal Palace following its relocation to Sydenham in 1854.
