About this item
An unusual antique brass table vesta or nib holder decorated with a novelty black enamel figure of a boy diving on the ground dating from the 19th century. The heavily made vesta is of oval bowl shape with a hinged cover opening to reveal a rectangular recess with a rounded interior. The bowl stands raised on four flat round feet and is screw mounted on a rectangular tray shaped base which in turn is also raised on four feet. Regardless of purpose it is a quality and heavily made piece sadly lacking any identifying makers marks.
Provenance: acquired in the British Art Market
In good condition with wear and patina associated with age and use. There is a bit of distortion to the surface of the tray base however this does not detract.
