The Essentials
French patinated bronze boar's head inkwell Circa 1890–1910 After Christophe Fratin and signed BARRIE Hinged head with integral branch-form pen rests Good antique condition with the ink liner absentDescription
This bronze boar's head inkwell follows a design by the French animalier Christophe Fratin, whose original version was produced during the middle of the 19th century. This later French cast dates from around 1900 and carries the BARRIE signature.
The upper part of the head lifts to give access to the ink reservoir, while the boar is worked into a mass of oak foliage and branches that double as rests for pens. It is a clever piece of animalier design, turning Fratin's vigorous modelling of a wild boar into a fully functional desk object.
