    About this item

This wax impression of a seal is housed in a turned lignum vitae box measuring 63 mm (2.5 inches) in diameter and 12 mm (1/2 inch) thick. The coat of arms on the seal features a unicorn and an eagle as supporters below a baron's coronet. Beneath the coat of arms is the Latin motto "Non quo sed quo modo" (Not for whom but in what manner) which is the motto of Baron Seaford of Sussex. The Baronetcy was created in 1826 and this seal might have been made around that date. The inside of the lid carries a very detailed example of the engravers art and the name and address of the engraver, Henry Wiegall of 3 St. James's St London. Weigall was a member of the Royal Society of Arts, later emigrating to Australia in 1856 and dying there in 1882. The seal has a couple of chips and a crack to the side, whereas the box is in excellent condition.
