Antique 'American Missionary' Oak Swivel Seat Desk Chair by Ford and Company: circa 1900
This antique American Arts & Crafts oak desk chair has recently been traditionally restored including french polishing and waxing and is a lovely light golden colour.
It has a tall back with tiny scrolls to the top corners of the wide panelled backrest, below this are a group of shaped laths.
The shaped arms have scrolled ends and are supported by boldly turned uprights.
It has a solid shaped saddle seat, with four curved legs attached to the swivel mechanism and terminating in brass castors.
The cast iron swivel mechanism has the manufacturers name *Ford Johnson and Co Chicago, cast into the surface.
It is adjustable for height and has the facility for leaning back on the chair and automatically returning to the upright position.
This is a very well made, good quality and attractive desk chair ideal for use with an antique desk.

*The Ford & Johnson Company was founded by John Sherlock Ford and Henry W. Johnson in Columbus, Ohio in 1867 as a chair manufacturing company. In 1868 the company relocated their factory to Michigan City, Indiana. In 1872 the company moved their headquarters to Chicago where they opened a showroom at 302 Wabash Avenue. They became known as J. S. Ford, Johnson & Company.
Ford Johnson established themselves as a high quality manufacturer of Mission Style furniture that was sold across the United States. Ford Johnson was best known for their chairs and settees. They created their own unique designs as well as creating generic versions of admired designs of Gustav Stickley and others.
