    Gold Massey III by Tobias.

    Signed: S I Tobias & Co - Liverpool. Circa: 1825. Diameter: 46 mm. Depth: 7mm.

    An early 19th Century Massey type three lever by Samuel Tobias with decorative gold dial in an engine turned gold open face case. Half plate gilt keywind fusee movement with sprung dust cover. Harrison's maintaining power. Engraved cock with diamond endstone, plain three arm steel balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. English Massey type three lever escapement. Attractive gold dial, engine turned ground with applied gold Roman numerals. The centre and border decorated with applied foliate three colour gold decoration, gold hands. Engine turned 18 carat open face case, chased and engraved middle and bezels, Wound and set through the gold inner dome, maker's mark W in a shield.

    An attractive watch in excellent overall condition, the engine turning crisp. The Tobias family manufactured this calibre of watch, almost all being signed for Morris Tobias. Samuel Tobias moved to the US early in the 19th Century. They commonly imported movements into the US and were then cased. The casemaker of this watch is William Warner of Philadelphia who worked from 1811 until the 1830's.
