A Stunning Edwardian, richly patinated mahogany desk in the Carlton house style by Maple of London. Finely carved and of fabulous quality, line inlaid and cross banded with exquisite marquetry panel detail throughout depicting exquisite Neoclassical motifs of urns, flowerhead, scrolls, trailing foliate and bell husks. The moulded and shaped upper section with centred shelf flanked with a pair of concave, sloping stationary compartments with hinged lids drawers which open to reveal a fitted section, all surmounted with 3/4 pierced brass gallery rail. Raised over desk top of serpentine form fitted with a gorgeous green gilt embossed tooled leather writing skiver surface above frieze fitted with one long drawer flanked with two sets of three graduated short drawers, all fitted with decorative brass swan neck handles with flowerhead paterae detail. Supported on elegant square tapering leg terminating spade foot with brass casters, stamped 'Maple & Co'.
Maple & Co.
Maple and Co. were one of the largest and most successful British furniture retailers and cabinet makers in the late 19th Century, Victorian and Edwardian periods. They were well known for exceptionally fine craftsmanship and were specialists in recreating classical designs in line with more modern trends. They produced many fine quality pieces of antique furniture inspired by designs in the manner of Adams, Hepplewhite and Chippendale amongst others.
Maple & Co. was first established by John Maple in Tottenham Court Road, London and together with his son, also John, the business Maple & Co. became an unrivalled success. With their skills in business and design, by the third quarter of the 19th Century they had become the largest furniture store in the world and were renowned throughout the interiors world, exporting their exceptionally fine antique furniture globally to many different countries. During the late 19th and early 20th Century, Maple & Co. had showrooms and workshops in Paris and Buenos Aires as well as London.
