    About this item

A fine George III Chippendale period mahogany serpentine architect's desk c.1760-80, complete with working lock and key.

The moulded rectangular top sits above a formed rectangular drawer which, when opened, extends the whole serpentine front to reveal a green baize lined slide, beneath which is a fitted interior boasting four brass handled short drawers, a filing division and a hinged quadrant side drawer. The whole sits upon four chamfered legs with shaped brackets.

Historic later brasses to the front. There is some wear commensurate with age throughout with some discolouration to the finish in areas, namely the lower centre part of the drawer (just below the moulding - from years of the drawer being extended) and a small area of patchiness to the left side edge of the top moulding. There are some small historic losses to the fore leg extremities in areas, again in areas where the front has been historically opened and closed.

The whole boasts an exceptional patina and colour throughout. An extremely attractive piece of unusual form.

For a similar example, see Edward T. Joy, The Country Life Book Of English Furniture, Wisbech 1968, p. 50 ( 'Thomas Chippendale (178-1719) And The Rococo Period'), fig. 59.
